Feminism in the Office
Have I mentioned before how much I enjoy reading the NYTimes? I sound like a broken record, I know.
Interesting article recently about how difficult it is for corporate women to strike the right balance - appearance, ambition, assertiveness (mere coincidence I piked three A words). It really hits home for me working in this male-dominated business.
Our department has a surprisingly high amount of women. There are FOUR Senior Analysts that are women, 1 Analyst (me), and TWO Associates. This is considerable considering there are only 12 Senior Analysts, 3 Analysts, and 11 Associates. Over 25% of our department (excluding admin, which is exclusively female) is female. This is a considerable feat in this business. I would venture that less than 10% of the research department's at bluge bracket firms are female.
Anyway, I can relate to this article. As soon as I stand up for myself and don't take crap from someone, I'm a bitch. I want to look nice, but if I get something to go my way on a day I'm in a nice/attractive outfit, I have to hear a stupid comment about how my boobs got us something.
