The Movie Comparison.... No Contest
Last weekend, or maybe the weekend before, Adam and I enjoyed a "date night" and saw the movie No Reservations we weren't really big fans. Last night, we watched the German movie that it was made off of called Mostly Martha. In some ways, it was frightening how the American Knock Off copied camera angels and dialogue directly. In other ways, we were shocked by the different direction the movie decided to take. Of most importance, attempting to turn a drama about an aunt bonding with her orphaned niece into a poorly contrived romantic comedy.
Honestly, neither movie did a particularly good job displaying how the two chefs fell for one another... And neither movie even bothered to explain why there wasn't any other family members to help raise this poor little girl. We wished that the German version had shown a scene or two where the niece was happy with Martha. There was a scene that No Reservations had in it that nicely conveyed that growing bond.
Mostly Martha had subtitles, so that did take some getting used to. Had I watched alone, I think, I would have attempted to watch it without the subtitles.
Thanks to Netflix, Adam and I plan on renting other German movies. There is one in particular that I saw while I was abroad that I would like to see again... Must go Netflix hunting....
