One of the guys I worked with told me about the dilema he was having regarding his wife's birthday. They both play tennis and she wants a new tennis racquet. The question he posed to me was whether or not he could just give her his racquet to her as a birthday present. He isn't a big fan of his racquet and she has been demo-ing different racquets and likes his racquet and grap the best. He figures that since he isn't in love with his racquet anyway, he will give it to her and just buy himself a new one.
My answer: Definitely Not!!! This reminded me of the Simpson's episode where Homer buys Marge a bowling ball for her birthday - i think it might have even had his name on it.
I told him he could still give her his racquet and buy himself a new one, but not as a birthday present. Back to square one. It was pretty funny!!!
Something has happened to my VOX account at work and the VOX webpage thinks that I am accessing the page from a mobile device. This screws up the way everything looks, but more importantly, has made it impossible to post anything - such a bummer.
I even deleted all of my cookies, and had to deal with not remembering a lot of saved passwords, in an attempt to fix it, but to no avail.... even my buddy in IT didn't have any suggestions.
Anyone know how to fix this? In the meantime, I will have to post when I get home.... if I get around to it. Today I wrote my posts at work, so I can just cut and paste them tonight - but what a pain in the butt!!!
Adam and I were cooking fiends today!!!
The day started off with a big egg & bacon breakfast, with momosas, of course. as we watched Federer beat Nadal in the Wimbledon finals. A perfect start to an enjoyable Sunday. The match went to 5 sets and at the start of the 5th set it was impossible to predict who would come out on top.
Adam cooked Dan's "Heart Attack" spaghetti sauce, which took hours and hours to simmer and perfect this afternoon. Meanwhile, I made tuna noodle salad, prepped my salad fixin's for a week of lunches, made potato salad and string bean salad (for the baseball picnic dinner I'm going to tomorrow night), and then, after dinner was cleaned up, I got motivated to make banana bread... of yeah, and Adam (my loving husband) grilled up my skirt steak, which is also for tomorrow. The only thing I didn't get to was the fruit salad, but I just didn't have it in me anymore.
I also ironed a bunch of clothes tonight while I watched The 4400 and managed to cram in some work - Wow, what a day! It always feels good getting up for work on Monday morning knowing that my outfit is already ironed, my lunch is prepped, and my workout clothes are ready to go.
I found this amusing today in an article in the travel section of the NY Times.
The article discusses what tourists think of the NYC subway system. It took me three months of living up there, taking countless subways to see apartments I could possibly sublet (what a nightmare that was!) for me to finally figure out how most of the trains worked. And even then, I would still slip up getting on in the wrong direction or a local instead of an express. I imagine the subway is even more overwhelming and disgusting for tourists that are coming from abroad, since just about every industrial country besides the US has a well-run public transportation system in place.
But if you're only here for a few days, how to survive? Take taxis and tour buses? You can't really claim you've been here until you've swiped a MetroCard and received a “swipe card again at this turnstile” message and a courtesy jolt to the pelvis, or experienced the utter discombobulation of emerging back onto street level and having no idea which way is north or south or east or west.
What board game are you really good at? Really bad at?
I'm pretty good at Rummicube, Risk, and Scategories
I stink at Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, and Balderdash...
Today, I called Ethan Allen and odered the armoire that I have had my eyes on for ages. The salesperson we spoke to when we were in the store last, just before the townhouse fell through, actually remembered who I was.
How many people "pet" their furniture? Not many I'm guessing.
I'm so excited!!!! I've been using this crappy armoire that my dad bought (and assembled) after my parents split - I'm long overdue for an upgrade. Its a bummer that it is expected to take 8-12 weeks for delivery -- I've got my fingers crossed that it comes sooner.
Yeah! Happy day!!!
I'm so excited!!! After years of trying to get it together, I'm finally reading a book with a book club. We meet next Thursday and I have lots of reading still to do. It figures that I finally get my act together on this just a month before I need to start studying for "the exam" -- as if I really have time for leasure-reading over the next couple of months....
This is the book we are reading... I'm only 100 pages in, but I think it is fabulous so far....
Adam has finally reached the point where he is considering other employment options. One option he has is to switch to the "Buy Side", meaning he would work for one of funds/trusts that buys the bonds he sells. The other option, since Bond-Trader seems to be a dying breed, is to go back for his MBA. While he doesn't need an MBA to do his current job (some of the older-timers only have a high school diploma), an MBA would be a good way to switch careers.
There are quite a few options here in Philly, Wharton (UPenn), Temple, Drexel, St. Joe's, and Villanova, but outside of Wharton, the other programs are only so-so. The biggest restriction we have for Adam selecting an MBA program is that I need to be able to keep my job - to support us. I cleared it with my boss and as long as we end up somewhere that my company has an office - they'd be OK with me relocating. This means that we could easily move to DC, Boston, or NYC (our preference is in that order), and even make other options feasible, since my firm has small branches along the East Coast...
Stay tuned..... Adam wouldn't be starting until next September, if he goest this route - so we have plenty of time to ponder, worry, scheme.... Another good reason that we didn't end up buying that damn townhouse!
I was online today looking at photos from Dickinson Alumni weekend, which took place a few weeks ago. I was surprised to see the number of alums, spanning all years, that had married other Dickinsonians... they seemed to be everywhere......
Then, when I thought about it, I realized that there are quite a few in our group of friends too... and most of us didn't start dating the Dickinsonian that we ultimately ended up with until after we graduated....
It's an unusual phenomenon.
About a week ago, I answered a QOTD about bad haircuts and promised to post photos of my misfortune....
I also mentioned a very scary wardrobe/hair choice for my first dance - Hey, it was 1988! Do I look cool with that side ponytail? How about the grey/pink sadal shoes? And you can't miss my bangle bracelet!!
I couldn't post ALL embarassing photos --- so here's one of my favorite photos of me when I was little... this was taken in April 1980 - so I was about 20 months old. How cute am I?
