I joined facebook a few weeks ago. So far, it has held my attention more than Myspace and I find the program easier to use, customerize, etc.... don't seem to know a lot of people using it, but every other day or so seems to bring another random friend/acquaintance from my past back in to my life..... some people (this annoying girl E in particular) I wasn't even friends with in high school, but I guess there are so few from my highschool class on facebook that she tracked me down. Easier to just agree to be her friend and then ignore her. In some cases I have though how do these people even think to track me down? -- like a former colleague/fling from my first job out of college. What made him think to even search for me?
Anyway, one of the Analysts I am friends with has a 14year old daughter. I've seen her in the office numerous times and we have a Gilmore Girls bond. She was also extremely handy when I wanted to chnage my IM photo (its 3 alternating tennis shots - pretty cool!). So, she friended me on facebook as well.
I couldn't help but notice the HUGE difference between her facebook profile, with over 300 friends and 600 instances where she had been "tagged" in a photo, compared to the roughly 20-35 people me and my other friends had, and normally 10-20 photos we each posted. The contrast was startling. Also, with the news-feed function, you can see how often people change their pages, are online, etc.... her page is constantly changing and it seems like she is on from when she gets home from school until she goes to bed.
It was interesting to see an article on this very topic today on slate.com. The author mentions that he can recall sending his very first email from college in 1996 - which is the same year I started college. I too remember how big a deal it was to first get email. And I also have a stack of emails from when my romance with Adam first began.
My age-bracket was one of the last years where students went off to college without having an email address. My highschool friends and I exchanged our school addresses and our dorm's phone number, if we happened to have it. My mom used to send me a letter about every week. She got email as a way to communicate with me, because I wasn't writing her letters back, but could easily keep her up to date with my life via email.... I got a hotmail account over Xmas break freshmen year because I couldn't access college email from home. I didn't get email until college and didn't get a cell phone until after graduation. It's amazing how far we've come. I'm not even 30 and I can barely keep up with all the cellphone gadgets - how do people older than me stand a chance?
Gotta say this is pretty funny, a bank intern who claimed to be taking a day off for a family emergency got busted by photos of him at a party located on facebook. I know stories of others that have gotten fired for talking crap about their employer on their blog....
I have 2 work friends on facebook --- definitely not looking for anymore now!!!
