Maultaschen is a type of German ravioli - the filling is meat and spinach.  Adam went up to Jersey this weekend and made a huge batch with my mom and two aunts.  It will be part of our Chrismas dinner.  It's a big undertaking!  Thrilled TO DEATH that my mom sent Adam home with some...   

I have fond memories of this meal being cooked by my grandmother in Germany.  This was ALWAYS the meal we would have the first day we would arrive to visit in the summer - Oma made it special for me because it was my favorite meal of hers.  The first course would be Mautaschen soup and then the second course would be dry Maultaschen with medley of salads.  The best part, I think, is eating them as leftovers thrown in a frying pan tossed in egg.  YUMMY!!!

What's your favorite appetizer to order at a restaurant?

This is tough.... I like so many!!!! 

Mussels, Calamari, Brushetta, Spinach & Artichoke Dip are probably my favorites.

I enjoy ording an appetizer as a dinner occasionally, since entree portions are normally unnecessarily large.  In that case, I like ordering the crab cake or a quesida (wow, I just butchered that!).

What a tough question... in Germany, it is always great drinking the local microbrews, but I don't really know any of them by name... here in Philly, I like to go with either a Stella or a Hoogarten, depending on my mood.

Adam pointed out this funny article in The Onion that I have been meaning to link too....  funny

Here's an excerpt: According to reports, Svoboda's wife of seven years, Linda Svoboda, was visiting her sister in Kansas City when an unexpected auto repair emergency left her stranded there for three days. Her drive home delayed indefinitely, she was unable to provide Svoboda with life-giving foodstuffs for over 72 hours.

Although police and investigative authorities are still gathering data, early reconstructions indicate that Svoboda, 31, ran out of the pre-prepared sack lunches and frozen spaghetti dinners his wife had left him before her trip at approximately 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, probably during the local telecast of the Prairieville/Dunston high school football game.

I couldn't stop giggling after I read it.... Its especially funny when you think about how my colleague's wife was worried about feeding him when she was away, as was I when I left Adam solo for an extended business trip.

I spent $30 at the produce stand!!!  We buy all of our produce at a little bodego here in Philly that is run by a Korean family, called Sue's.  The produce is always extremely fresh and much cheaper than the grocery store.  I'm in there at least 3 times a week!I bought fixin's for german potato salad, lunch salad fixin's for the week, plenty of fruit for a big fruit salad and ingredigents to make some more pesto.  YUMMY!!!

We enjoyed a delightful, spur-of the moment trip to Jersey on Sunday.  As Adam and I were sitting on the couch enjoying the NYTimes debating how we would spend the day, my mom called to say that her "Germany company" had cancelled last-minute and she had food for 5 and noone to eat it with her.  Adam hasn't seen my mom since February and I haven't seen her much either, so we hopped in the car for a visit.  The weather was perfect for a leasurely drive. 

We enjoyed sitting on the porch, taking in some nature, while drinking Fuzzy Navels.  Then we had a tasty dinner of pork tenderloin, potato salad, broccoli salad, and tomato/basil salad -- I love sald-centric dinners!  So summery!  We also got a big kick out of answering questions from one of my mom's coffee table books.

The book was tons of fun and apparently there are three in the series.  I think I'm going to get one since it was such a great conversation starter... lots of the questions were so vague that we had to discuss the parameters before we could answer.

It's so nice to be treated to Glossen Suppe and Spätzle after a hard day of work.... also nice to be sleeping on a real bed during the week, instead of an air mattress.  Unfortunately, my commute to work is about 1hr 15min, but it doesn't feel all that long.

I just spent $18.02 for 2 apples, 1 yougart, 1.5lbs of grapes, and some string cheese.  GOOD LORD!!!

At Sue's, our favorite neighborhood produce store in Philly, I can buy a week's worth of produce for that price.
