I went to sleep on Sunday thinking that we would stay in Philly, and unless the offer was extremely unfavorable, I would return to my old firm. Monday morning, dragging because I had to catch up the 5:52am train, I was still convinced that staying in Philly was the right decision.

Then, at work, things were going extremely smoothly with a project that took me practically three days last month completed in just a few hours and I thought "hey, I can cut it here!" Walking to work today, I thought about all the different restaurants Adam & I could try out once we relocated (for some reason there are a lot of Indian restaurants on my walk to work!), so I was still in a NYC-mood.

Then, this afternoon, one of the women I share an office with was extremely rude when I didn't know an electric utility term she felt I should already knowt... and I am back to thinking that Philly is where I belong, covering the water sector, which I know extremely well. It doesn't seem to take much to change my thinking...

back and forth... Philly... NYC... Philly.... this is driving me nuts!

My boss sat me down yesterday and asked how I was feeling about my time at the firm so far, what I felt he should be doing to help me get up to speed, etc... He asked how I was handling the odd living situation, how Adam's job search was going, etc... it almost felt as if he KNEW that I was considering to leave.

So I spoke with the new Water Analyst and the Director of Research (DOR) at my old firm. Both apologized profusely for the way things happened when I left (although neither really had anything to do with how that happened). I spoke to the Analyst about the responsibilities I would have as part of her team. She is based in DC, but I would stay in the Philly office. Down the road she sees us hiring a third, more junior Associate. The firm is doing a lot of investment banking business in my sector and she has a lot of work to do as a result. Hiring somone with experience in the sector will make a big difference and there just aren't really any other people at my level (besides her Associate who chose not to join her when she got hired). Her interest in hiring me comes from who well liked I was within the firm and with our management teams and the fact that she needs to initiate coverage on companies that she doesn't know at all that I know extremely well.

The DOR and I spoke more in broad strokes, we didn't discuss exact arrangements or finances. He did say that they would pay back my relocatin bonus and I could expect a pay increase. The pay increase would probably put my salary close to what I am making at my new firm (NYC salary in Philly sounds great to me!). I would come back at the newly promoted level I left at (I got promoted when my boss passed away), but would be doing Associate-like responsibilities for the first 6-8months as I prove that I can cover my own names. A big concern I have is that things always take longer than they say, and I wouldn't want it to take more than a year to pick up my own coverage, especially on the smaller names that the current Water Analyst doesn't know at all.

The way I left it with both is that we would only get more specific about details if I expressed a real interest in coming back. Thankfully, they understand the position that I am in and it tough for me to decide if I like my current job because I haven't even been there 2 months yet. They are going to proceed looking for another Associate to hire, unless I tell them I am interested, in which case, we will get more specific on the details of my return.

Ever since Friday, especially last night, I've been losing sleep over this decision. What it really comes down to is a lifestyle choice. Do I want to work for a large firm in NYC, where my career can really take off, or do I work at the smaller shop where my life doesn't revolve around my work. It's a tough decision and I have gone back and forth numerous times. Going back to my old firm is the easier - but easy isn't necessarily better. Is my current job worth all the stress and aggrevation related to Adam finding a job and us relocating? Especially if we want to move back to this area within the next 5 years? Is it worth leaving? Will it be difficult to find jobs to get us back here? In a way, we feel like moving to NYC puts our life on hold in a way. If I return to my old position, we can start thinking about buying a house and starting a family sooner.

This afternoon, I went saw another apartment to sublet. The place looked decent, and the roommate (Ericka) seemed normal enough, so I cut a check right then and there. I'm so happy that I no longer need to be pre-occupied with constantly searching craigslist and wasting so much time hiking around the city to check out apartments. Ericka is a puerto-rican nanny, with not-great English skills, so we won't exactly become buddy-buddy, but at least she isn't a burnt out loser like Frankie was. The commute is about 25-30min from my office, which is decent.

I was hoping to find somethign Lower (or Upper) East Side, but this is on 104th street - Spanish Harlem.

So, Frankie, is the person subletting an apartment on UES, which I saw today at 6pm (I had to come back to work aftewards - yuck!!!). Although Frankie calls himself a 27 yr-old professional male, I think that's a bit of a stretch for the schlepp that I met, that isn't working right now because he is trying to milk his disability pay for as long as he can. I'm pretty sure he was stoned when I was there, which I also find interesting considering the ad mentioned looking for someone that was "responsible, clean, & drug free". To make Frankie even more unusual is that he was the only person subletting so far that has asked for references -- didn't really seem to add up.

I probably could have looked past his stoned-ness if the apartment wasn't one big hazy of cigarette smoke and completely empty. I could have handled having an unfurnished room (use my aerobed and a big suitcase), but I kind of want a living room that has furniture and a kitchen that has a pot or two -- otherwise, I could have just stayed with Nick! His roommate that moved out took all his stuff and Frankie hadn't replaced thigs yet. Did I mention that the living room was completely empty? It's a bummer about Frankie's apartment because I absolutely loved the neighborhood - Upper East Side/Yorkville.

So, that's that. I'm trying to not even look at craigslist anymore this week, since it is pointless. Most apartments go in either 24-48hrs, have open houses on weekends (when I'm not in the city), or have been continually posted (there is this one guy who has an ad that states that he is a 35 yr old gay eastern European that I have probably come across 20 times already!). Since I am away on business for the rest of the week, I don't have a chance of getting any apartment I like that gets posted in the next couple of days anyway....... resist the urge.... resist the urge.... It's become such a habit for me to obsessively check craigslist, it isn't as easy as it sounds to stay off the webpage...

It looks like I am going to need more than just a little luck to find something.

I'm seeing an apartment on the Upper East Side (UES) tonight!!! Let's hope this place is a keeper. My roommate would be a guy, which is something I had been trying to avoid... at this point, it's time to be a little less selective. He posted the ad yesterday, but had been out of town yesterday & today, so he hasn't been able to show the place (most places go in 24-48hrs!!). I'm going to check it out at 6:30 tonight. This time I know to write a check while I am there if I like it -- not making that mistake twice!

My biggest concern is that the ad didn't mention whether or not the place was furnished. At this point, if everything else is OK about the place (and Frankie, the guy, seems normal) I'm going to take it even if it means a couple more months of the aerobed - at least I wouldn' t have to prop it up against the wall every morning before I go to work. One of the perks is that Adam & I are interested in living on UES - so I would get a chance to feel out the neighborhood before we start looking for our own place.

I left a VM for someone else that has a place on UES - it was be nice if I could see two in one area at the same time...

So, low and behold, the person that snagged the apartment from me last night, followed through and paid today, so i didn't get it... not that I was expecting it -- but, gee, wouldn't it had been nice if the stars had somehow aligned to work in my favor??? Today, I continued my search on craigslist, but it is exhausting and I sense that everyone gets a little more aggressive/desperate at the end of the month, and I just wasn't up for that. Worst case scenerio, I can just stay here with Bridget - it's not like I am getting tossed to the curb at the end of the month.. I'm just so disappointed about this situation, because I really liked that place yesterday and I felt it slip through my fingers.... All these "If I had just...." have been going through my mind all day. Alas, time to move on.

So, tonight, I went out for drinks with Nick (Adam's best man at our wedding) and we agreed to terms of me living with him. It's a bit of ad odd situation since I couldn't get him to agree to having me when he first knew he was moving into NYC. His rent is over 3K a month, and I didn't feel like I should have to pay half, or even close to that, since I would be living in a bear-bones, unfurnished apartment. I wasn't willing to spend a lot of money to stay with Nick, even though he is a close friend, when I know that I could stay in a fully FURNISHED apartment in a decent neighborhood for 800-900/month. We agreed on an amount which we both thought was fair, and that is conveniently slightly below what we are collecting from Neal, our soon-to-be subletter. He didn't have a backplan if I decided not to stay with him, so anything he gets is going to be more than the alternative. If things with Nick wouldn't have worked, either his wife didn't want me staying there or we couldn't agree on a price, I could just suck it up and give Bridget the 500/month she was asking for me to stay (which I thought was a fair price).

I feel good about my decision. Its an improvement over my current living arrangement, and is hardly goign to bankrupt us. It gives me some time to find something more permanent (you know, that has furniture and a REAL bed) and it gives Adam some more cushion to find an apartment before I committ to anything. Hey - maybe the stars will align and Adam will find something and we can find something permanent quickly!!! Dreaming, I know...

So, that's that from this end. It's Tuesday and I am already looking forward to the weekend - as usual.....
