I have been annoyed at the premise of this show and it one of very few reality shows that I completely ignore (the others are Survivor, Big Brother, & American Idol - in case you care).
I think its great for a show to centera around helping families in need, but this exibition of excess brings with it even more problems. Here's a local example. People who can't afford a large house to begin with, aren't going to be able to afford their now larger utility expenses, maintenance, or reassessed taxes.
PARKING WARS!!!
This show is hilarious.... and it takes place in Philly, so we love spotting areas of town that we recognize.
"Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" shows the real-life drama of celebrities in drug rehab. Do you think this is helpful or exploitative?
I LOVE the trashy-ness of this show. It fills a nice void that's been missing in "bad-reality TV world" since Temptation Island ended. I think this show would be considered exploitative IF it was a show about non-celebs going through the recovery process. All of these people are accustomed to being in front of the camera and three or four of them have already been on other VH1 Celeb-reality TV shows (two on the Surreal Life and one on Celebrity Fit Club). Drugged up or not, they (and/or their agents that got them on the show) knew what they were getting into.
Is it helpful? Probably not. But who cares? It's trashy reality TV about washed-up entertainers trying to make some money and in the meantime, kick their bad habits.... interestingly, it's already been leaked that one of the people on the show (the blond girl who was on American Idol) has already gotten arrested for public drunkness and being biligerent/abusive to cops since the show wrapped up. Dr. Drew was able to convince the judge not to throw her in jail. Instead, she's having another dose of rehab - this time without the cameras....
One of the shows hit hardest by the writers' strike is The Daily Show and The Colbert Report - fake news, needs fresh writing daily. I was happy to stumble upon this article today (yeah, I'm productive at work, I know) that mentioned a new webpage that has archived daily show clips -- don't think I'm going to get any more productive before the end of the day now!
Was finally able to watch the end of Season 1 (thank you Netflix) and the episodes from Season 2 that our trusty DVR has been dutifully saving. I still can't believe all of the plot twists they were able to cram in to one season - turns out there only in Season 2 now.... its a little ridiculous, but I'm hooked nonetheless.....
I read a fabulous feminist webpage (www.feministing.com) and was shocked to see that Ugly Betty/America Ferrera was a topic. Here's this show that gets all these accolades about having a "real" female lead, and then Glamour goes and photoshops the crap out of her. She doesn't even look healthy in the photo-shopped version. AND, to steal one of the comments written on the subject: "Isn’t it ironic that the 2nd episode in Season 1 of "Ugly Betty" centered around her encouraging a star to forgo the Photoshop in a shoot and now here she is on a magazine cover with her body shrunk?" Shame, shame!!
As I've mentioned previously, I've been very excited about Amazing Race starting up again. The first episode was on Sunday - we didn't watch live because the Eagles were loosing to Dallas then, but finally got around to watching it on Friday night.
Well, since the football game ran late, it through off the whole timing of programming for the evening and our DVR didn't know that it was taping 60 Minutes when it was supposed to be taping Amazing Race. We only got to watch about half of the episode. Since so many networks seem to broadcast all of their shows on the internet, I figured it would be no big deal to catch up sitting at my computer.
Turns out, CBS only does it for a couple of shows, and Amazing Race aint one of them! The nerve!!! The show has won a bunch of Emmy's, how could you NOT have this be one of the shows to make available online. GRRR...
So, I was left to read the recap to learn that this was the first team voted off -- how very disappointing!!!! Tonight, we know to keep an eye on CBS to make sure that we DVR properly - what a pain! Another reason I am looking forward to the end of the football season!
Not only did Amazing Race 12 start yesterday, but I found reruns of the Amazing Race AllStars on one of the random cable channels. We didn't start watching the All Star season until halfway through, so I'm looking forward to catching up.
So excited to see that Amazing Race is coming back!!! The first episode airs on Sunday, November 4th!
Really looking forward to a show that Adam and I can enjoy watching together!!!
Looks like they have some interesting pairs competing this time around. Most interesting is the Goth couple. There's also two sibling teams, a team of gay minister lovers, and a grandfather/grandson. I really enjoy guessing which team is going to get eliminated before the episode even starts....
Adam and I go through phases of having wacky saying that we holler out to one another that doesn't really make sense or have any rhyme or reason.... our latest one is to scream "Ticky Tacky!" which comes from the theme song to Weeds, which I had stuck in my head for a long time as I was catching up on previous seasons. I'm all caught up now and really enjoying watching the show once a week.
